VOCABULARY-5 Steps
Find a NEW and IMPORTANT vocabulary word from your independent book. Follow the guidelines below for a quality post.
1. State the title and author of your book. Summarize the main event/idea in which the vocabulary word was used including quoting the sentence in which the word was used. Show the importance of knowing this vocabulary word in understanding that main event.
2. Explain how you used context clues to gain meaning of the unfamiliar word.
3. Define the new vocabulary word in your own words including its part of speech. (noun, verb, adjective, adverb)
4.How would you use this word in a sentence? Provide enough detail in your sentence such that your sentence contains context clues.
5. Finally...Go beyond! If you know it, show it!
Choose any two of the following:
a. Mention synonyms and/or antonyms of your word.
b. Are there additional meanings? How could you use this new meaning of your word in a sentence?
c. Are there other forms of this word? Can it be used as a noun, verb, adjective, or an adverb? Provide an example.
d. Create an analogy for your word.
e. Does it have a favorable or negative connotation? Explain.
f. How do the prefixes, suffixes, or roots help to gain meaning of the word?
g. Can you create a simile, metaphor, hyperbole, pun...(figurative language)?

Literary Text/Poetry
Before writing your blog be sure to:
1. Select one of the following prompts to respond to. The topic chosen should be something NEW!
2. Be sure to include all necessary parts for a well written paragraph:
*Introduction (This includes the title, author, and main point creatively stated)
*Body (Summarize the event as it relates to your chosen topic. Include a voice too. Share your thoughts, feelings, questions. . .)
*Conclusion (Creatively wrap it up.)
Choices:
*Is there anything unusual about how the book began? Did the author use good word choice to draw you into the story/poem? What did the author do to make you want to read more?
*Describe the main character (protagonist) based on what you have read so far. Explain a problem he or she is facing in the story/poem and explain the actions the character has taken. Do you agree with what the character is doing or not doing?
*Where does the story/poem take place? What impact does the setting of the story/poem have on the characters? What impact does the setting have on you?
*Make a prediction that relates to what is happening in the book so far. Support your prediction with facts that you have read and can discuss.
*Do you question any of the decisions that a character has made at this point in the story/poem? What do you question and why? (Evaluate)
*Does any part of this story/poem make you feel scared, annoyed, mad, angry, frustrated, happy or horrified? (This is the MOOD.) Which part? Give an example from the story (This is the TONE.) and describe your feelings about it.
*Choose a minor character from the story/poem. Show how he/she impacts the plot, other characters, and theme.
*Select a character from your book/poem and think about how you would describe that character's personality traits by studying an event, a conflict, AND dialogue. Be sure to quote the character's words when making your inference.
*List several things that you value or that are important to you. List a character's values. Compare and contrast the two pointing out the similarities and differences.
*How has the main character grown and changed (dynamic) as the story/poem progressed? Give several examples from the book.
*What is the author's theme (message) for this story? Explain with examples from the story/poem how you came to this conclusion.
*Synthesizing...As you read you often come across new knowledge which changes your thinking. One way to keep track of this is to use this sentence stater: I used to think... but now I know...Discuss this process explaining this NEW UNDERSTANDING.
What is your author's point of view? 1st, 2nd, 3rd omniscient, 3rd limited/subjective, 3rd objective
How does the author develop this point of view in the text?

Informational Text

*Body (Summarize the factual information as it relates to your chosen topic. Include a voice too. Share your thoughts, feelings, questions. . .)
*Conclusion (Creatively wrap it up.)
Choices:
*What connection(s) do you find between the text and your life? Cite text evidence to support your thinking.
*What are 2 new things you learned? Teach these new concepts to your classmates.
*Describe a graphic such as a map, graph, chart...Explain why this is significant to understanding the bigger idea that is written in the text.
*What assumptions, opinions, or ideas would you like to challenge or debate with the author? Discuss this information thoroughly.
*What is the main idea of the text? Then, give 3 details from the text that support this main idea.
*What is the overall text structure? Description, Cause/Effect, Problem/Solution, Compare/Contrast, OR Order/Sequence. How does this organization help the author to get his/her point across?
*Is there another point of view that your author has left out? What is the author's bias? What is the author not saying?
